Spending hours hunched over your phone? You’re definitely not alone, and chances are your neck is feeling the strain. “Tech neck” is a real and common complaint, but thankfully, incorporating a few simple stretches into your day can make a world of difference for your comfort and posture.
Here are some quick, gentle exercises you can do practically anywhere to give your neck a break:
- Chin Tucks: Sit or stand tall with your head level. Gently pull your chin straight back, as if trying to make a double chin, keeping your gaze forward. You should feel a slight stretch at the back of your neck. Hold for 5-10 seconds, then release. This helps realign your head over your spine.
- Side Neck Tilts: Gently drop your right ear towards your right shoulder, keeping your left shoulder relaxed and down. You should feel a stretch along the left side of your neck. Hold for 15-20 seconds. Return to the center and repeat on the other side.
- Neck Rotations: Slowly turn your head to look over your right shoulder, keeping your chin level and shoulders relaxed. Hold for 15-20 seconds. Gently return to the center, then repeat to your left shoulder.
- Shoulder Rolls: Roll your shoulders up towards your ears, then back and down in a smooth, circular motion. Repeat 5-10 times, then reverse the direction, rolling forward 5-10 times. This helps release tension in your upper back and shoulders, which often contributes to neck pain.
Perform these stretches slowly and gently, never forcing any movement or causing pain. Aim for a few repetitions of each throughout your day, especially after long phone sessions.
Integrate these quick stretches into your daily routine, and give your neck the love and relief it deserves!
